The following is a list of the programs and organizations that received RMHC-SD funding within the past two years and a brief descriptions about these programs which help children throughout our community.
RMHC Scholarship Programs, San Diego County
RMHC/African-American Future Achievers, RMHC/ASIA, RMHC/HACER, Ray A. Kroc Community Achievement Scholarship - RMHC-SD provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Supported by San Diego County McDonald's, these programs aid San Diego youth who strive for higher education. Twenty RMHC-SD scholarships will be awarded in 2004-2005 school year in the amount of $2,500 each. For more information about RMHC-SD scholarship programs, click here.
Alternatives Pregnancy Care Clinic, Escondido
Prevention Services -- A program that uses training in the clinic and in the
community (at schools churches and youth clubs), and targets girls and boys
ages 11-17 to equip students with the information needed to make healthy
life decisions regarding sex, pregnancy and STDs. The program focuses on
abstinence.
ARC San Diego, San Diego
Camp-A-Little -- A summer residential camp that serves more than 100 San
Diego children ages 6 through 17 with developmental disabilities.
Bayside Settlement House, San Diego
Performing Arts Center for Youth -- The goal of the Performing Arts Center
in Linda Vista, a collaborative effort between Bayside Settlement House and
the Circus Earth Foundation, is to show young people a pathway to
responsible adulthood through rewards. Bayside Settlement House provides space, supplies and volunteer
support while the Circus Earth Foundation provides staff.
Center for Spanish Colonial Archaeology, San Diego
The San Diego Presidio through Children's Eyes: A Hands-on Living History
and Archaeology Educational Program -- Elaboration of a successful '95-'96
program based on hands-on excavations, lab work, and living history open to
public and private school children from third to tenth grades.
Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego
Piņatas Encantadas - Enchanted Piņatas -- The program brings 160 junior high
and high school students to the Balboa Park facility for guided tours of
murals, workshops with artist, and two piņata artisans where students
create their own piņata designs.
Children's Hospital & Health Center, San Diego
Critical Care Family Areas -- RMHC funded the conversion of waiting areas
into family areas called Family Centers. These Family Centers treat an
average of 20 patients per unit per day and approximately 76 guests on a
daily basis.

Children's 10Mobile -- RMHC provided funding to cover expenses for the
10Moblie which provides complimentary health services in neighborhoods
throughout San Diego.
Chula Vista Elementary School District, Chula Vista
Exercise the Dream -- At the ARCO Training Center the partner program
between the school district and the training center educates and motivates
students to establish healthy lifestyle practices through physical activity
and to set personal achievement goals by showing them what it is like to be
Olympians. The program serves children grades K-6 primarily and 300 high
schools students secondarily.
Conner's Cause for Children, Inc., Encinitas
Pharmaceutical Aid Program -- The organization serves families who have
children with life threatening illnesses by working with insurance
companies and providers with the goal of maximizing reimbursements and
negotiating any remaining medical balances. RMHC funds provide monetary
assistance for medication prescribed but not covered by insurance policies.
Copley Family YMCA, San Diego
Youth Programming -- RMHC provided funding for Copley's Youth Programming
for "at risk" kids. The component of the funded program included forming a
soccer league for junior high and high school students, sending two high
school students to the California YMCA Youth and Government Conference,
providing computers and software for the computer lab and strengthening the
literacy program with older students helping younger ones to read.
Copley Family YMCA, San Diego
Y Basketball for Youth Equipment -- RMHC provided funding for scoreboards,
pads and goals, and more for the new youth center which is scheduled to
open in this year.
Faith & Love Ministries, Inc., Vista
Faith & Love Soup Kitchen -- RMHC provided funding to help the soup kitchen feed homeless and poor children in Vista and surrounding North County communities. Nearly 10,000 meals are served to children annually, 20% of all meals served.
Family Literacy Foundation, Solana Beach
Uniting Through Reading -- RMHC funded the cost for 200 families to participate in a program that allows deployed military parents to communicate and bond with their children while reading a story aloud on videotape. The program will serve 2,000 deploying families this year.
Greater San Diego Inner-City Games, San Diego
15-Passenger Van -- RMHC provided funding for a new 15-passenger van that was urgently needed too provide free and safe transportation to sponsored events throughout the City and County. Inner-City games promotes and encourages health, physical fitness and academic achievement of children (primarily 8-17) who are "at-risk" to succumb to drug use, gangs, juvenile delinquency, youth crime and random acts of violence.
Harborside Elementary School, Chula Vista
Harborside Early Literacy Program -- RMHC purchased the Waterford Early Research Reading Program for kindergarten students and their parents which provides students with direct one-on-one interaction and feedback without requiring one teacher per student. The program utilizes specialized computer software and computer workstations allow each student individual attention.
Kids on the Block, San Diego
Puppet Program for Medical Conditions -- RMHC supported this unique program that uses life-sized puppets representing children in a variety of physical and learning disabilities, medical conditions and social problems. The puppets enlighten children on the issues of disability awareness, medical/educational differences and social concerns.
Lakeside Union School District, San Diego
STOP - Students Thinking Over Parenthood -- RMHC supported this program that uses baby simulators, better known as "Baby Think it Over" dolls. These dolls (strollers, car seats, etc.) are assigned to pre-adult boys and girls in Jr. and Sr. High Schools to introduce students to the real, often difficult world of having a baby, and the responsibilities of being a parent for a few days.
Logan Heights Family Health Center, San Diego
Spring Valley Family Health Center -- RMHC provided funding for the construction of a children's playground including equipment, landscaping, lighting and fencing of the play area. The playground is located at the Spring Valley Family Health Center which is geared primarily toward the provision of quality medical care services to children.
Malashock Dance & Company, San Diego
Children In Motion -- RMHC provided funds to acquire a portable sound system and video equipment to document, expand and enhance the program which impacts fifth graders in SD County Unified and DHH children. These children's educational outreach programs help children find new means of self-expression through the art of dance.
Mama's Kitchen, San Diego
Meal Delivery Program -- RMHC supported this program that provides essential food and nutrition for children in San Diego who are or whose parents are affected by HIV/AIDS.
North County Health Services, San Marcos
Health Careers for Disadvantaged Students -- RMHC provided funding for this college prep program for disadvantaged high school students preparing for professional health care careers. This is a joint project between North County Health Services and San Marcos High School for bicultural/bilingual health professionals to work medically under-served areas. It combines academic study, clinical internships, mentoring by medical students, counseling, goal setting and summer study on a medical campus.
Palomar Family Counseling Service, Inc., Escondido
Y.E.S. (Youth Enlightened to Succeed) Coalition -- RMHC supported this collaborative system of programs carried out at multiple sites throughout Escondido and North County. The program provides early intervention and assessment of behavioral problems at agency sites including 13 YMCAs, two Escondido Boys & Girls Clubs and four additional North County Boys & Girls Club sites among others.
Palomar Pomerado Health Center, Poway
Renovation of Pediatric Unit -- RMHC funded the renovation of the Pediatric Unit in Escondido, a 333-bed acute care hospital. Upgrades included the replacement of carpeting and floor covering, lamination of doors and paneling, improvement of lighting, replace window coverings and privacy curtains, sleep chairs, play room, waiting room, parent lounge furniture and more. Grant specifically requests funds to purchase 19 Memschoff sleep chairs for parents.
Pro Kids Golf Academy & Learning Center, San Diego
Pro Kids Youth Golf Tournament Program -- RMHC provided funding to underwrite numerous monthly youth golf tournaments which provide at-risk children a safe, healthy and positive environment during times when they are not in school.
San Diego Area Council of Boys & Girls Clubs, San Diego County
Street Safe -- RMHC funded this successful county-wide project designed to "street proof" at risk middle school children by removing them from the hostile environment of the streets during critical after school hours. At their local Boys & Girls Clubs, these youth are involved in activities exclusively for their age group that develop interests, values and pre-employment skills.
San Diego Armed Services YMCA, San Diego
After-school Program "Funmobile" -- RMHC funded the Funmobile which travels to neighborhoods highly populated with military dependents and specifically targets four elementary schools. The van is stocked with sports equipment, games, arts and crafts supplies, and educational information.
San Diego Blood Bank, San Diego
Cord Blood Program -- Funding to purchase a liquid nitrogen freezer to help establish a life-saving program where stem cells from umbilical cords are transplanted in order to treat life-threatening diseases such as Hodgkin's, lymphoma and other cancers and auto-immune disorders.
San Diego Center for Children, San Diego
Ronald McDonald Playground -- RMHC funded the construction of the Center's Kearny Mesa campus playground. The new playground contains necessary elements of growth for emotionally disturbed children and gives clinicians and occupational/recreational therapists a unique, fun setting to observe the children without constraints of a formal, office environment.
San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Encinitas
Carnival Concerts for Children and Their Families -- Funding helped underwrite the cooperative effort with numerous school districts, youth music groups and other performing arts organizations in SD county to host four Carnival Concerts. The thematic, interactive productions are for children, ages 4-12, and thier famalies in order to enhance learning, enjoyment and awareness of classical music.
San Diego County Special Olympics, San Diego
Van -- RMHC provided funding for the purchase a new van to transport athletes to practices and tournaments in the County and throughout the State.
San Diego Dance Institute, San Diego
Dance Institute Resource Library -- RMHC purchased a library of dance education books, CDs and videos in order to enhance the teaching ability and skills of the artists who teach children.
San Diego Hospice, San Diego
Bereavement Publication "Talk to Me, Too" -- RMHC funded the production of "Talk to Me, Too," a publication created for the sole purpose of children helping other children in similar bereavement circumstances. It is written by children participating in the San Diego Hospice's children's bereavement support groups and distributed to other children throughout San Diego County who are experiencing similar grief and loss feelings as a result of death of a sibling, friend, parent, teacher or loved one.
Sharp HealthCare Foundation, Chula Vista
The Spirit of Caring Mobile Health Care Clinic -- RMHC helped purchase the mobile clinic vehicle that serves disadvantaged children in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.
Sudanese English Project, San Diego
Duel Gora Learning Center Van -- RHMC funding helped purchase a new van for the center, which teaches more than 100 Sudanese refugee children, ages 5-18, to achieve academically and overcome barriers to literacy and education. The 15-passenger van which will transport children to and from the after school center on a daily basis.
Sweetwater Union High School District, Chula Vista
RMHC Family Counseling Clinic -- RMHC provided funding to develop a family counseling clinic at Castle Park Middle School which provides the 1,200 students and families of that community with counseling and therapeutic services. The school works cooperatively with the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at San Diego State University.
UCSD School of Medicine, Southeast San Diego
Baker Montessori School Free Clinic -- Funds helped purchase a medical clinic mobile motor home for the Baker Montessori School Free Clinic to expand services at a student-run free clinic which provides medical care for low-income, indigent, homeless, and uninsured people of San Diego. The site is one of three and is located in the Mountain View area of southeast SD.
Vista Community Clinic, Vista
RMHC-SD Pediatric Care Center -- RMHC helped fund the construction of 29,000 sq. ft. medical center and outside play area that serves poor families in North County.
Vista Hill Foundation/Stein Education Center, San Diego
Van for Stein Education Center Transportation -- RMHC provided funds for the purchase of an additional mini-van to help transport students enrolled in the education program. Students participate in activities that help them learn important social skills to help them live more independent lives.
Voices for Children, San Diego
Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (CASA) -- RMHC supports children removed from their homes through the CASA program. The program utilizes community volunteers with an interest in safeguarding the welfare of San Diego's children to serve as legally recognized advocates. Volunteers attend and intensive training before their appointment.
YMCA of SD County/South Bay Family YMCA, Chula Vista
Capital Development Campaign -- RMHC funded the capital development project to construct a new full-service facility for South Bay YMCA. It includes two pools, locker rooms, a wellness center, a child discovery center and multi-purpose community meeting spaces.
