Ten Local Students Receive Scholarships Toward A College Education From McDonalds®
SAN DIEGO – May 18, 2011 – In recognition of their outstanding academic performance and personal achievements, ten high school seniors of Hispanic origin have received $2,000 each toward a college education thanks to the Ronald McDonald House Charities®/Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources (HACER)® scholarship.
The RMHC/HACER scholarship is awarded by Ronald McDonald House Charities® of San Diego, the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California and San Diego and the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of San Diego.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage and also be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a complete course of study in the 2011-2012 academic school year. Applicants are evaluated on an academic basis, financial need, personal successes and their commitment to the community.
“Since we began offering the HACER scholarship exclusively to San Diego County students in 1990, we have seen the drive and determination for academic success local students possess, and we are proud to help them achieve their goals of a higher education,” said Ernie Sandoval, San Diego McDonald’s owner/operator and HACER scholarship chair.
Nationally, the RMHC/HACER scholarship has become one of the largest college scholarship programs for Hispanic students. Since its inception, more than 14,000 Hispanic students throughout the nation have been awarded more than $20 million in scholarships to support their college education.
This year, ten scholarship recipients in San Diego County will be awarded $2,000 for their first year of college:
Erika Reyes and Israel Romero, Mission Bay High School; Daisy Garcia, Vista High School; Rose Ynohuye and Jovonnie Gonzales, Castle Park High School; Jessica Guadarrama and Santos De La Paz, Orange Glen High School; Blanca Hernandez, James Madison High School; Jeannette Prado, Escondido High School; Ismael Munoz, West Hills High School.
