Ten Local Students Receive HACER Scholarship
SAN DIEGO – May 25, 2010 – Ten outstanding high school seniors will be heading to college with $2,000 already paid toward their education, thanks to the RMHC®/HACER® scholarship.
The RMHC/HACER scholarship, which stands for Ronald McDonald House Charities®/Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources® scholarship, is awarded by the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California and San Diego, and the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California and San Diego.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage and also be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a complete course of study.
Nationally, the RMHC/HACER scholarship has become one of the largest college scholarship programs for Hispanic students. Since its inception, more than 13,000 Hispanic students throughout the nation have been awarded more than $19.1 million in scholarships to support their college education. Ten scholarship recipients in San Diego County will be awarded $2,000 for their first year of college.
“This year we had an unprecedented number of applicants who are driven to attend college, despite the hardships they face,” said Ernie Sandoval, San Diego McDonald’s owner/operator. “In hard economic times like these, it’s important for McDonald’s to continue its strong background of giving back to the community, and we’re glad we are able to help these students achieve their dreams of higher education.”
Applicants are evaluated on an academic basis, financial need, personal successes and their commitment to the community. A record number of more than 180 high school seniors applied, and 10 students across San Diego County were chosen:
Antonio Cienfuegos and Marco Guttierez, Bonita Vista High School; Maricela Leon, Oceanside High School; Janelle Phillips Morataya, San Pasqual High School; Lidia Orozco, San Marcos High School; Emilce Paez and Johanna Mejia Salgado, Lincoln High School; Celeste Perez, The Preuss School UCSD; Ismael Perez, Mission Bay High School; and Rio Jacinta Villa, Montgomery High School.
